The issue of tithe is a topic which seems to be kept in the closet very often, however on this blog everything is brought out of the closet and into the daylight and then weighed up against the truth from the bible.
When it comes to topics such as tithe, the most important point to consider is ‘why do we do the things that we do’. As discussed in a previous post we need to know why we believe what we believe otherwise we have no solid foundation that defines our behaviour. This idea of having a foundation specifically applies to the issue of tithing, otherwise why would someone voluntarily choose to sacrifice 10% of their earnings if they don’t know the real meaning of tithing or what it’s really about!
The church on a global scale represents the family of God here on earth, each member in the family personally chooses to follow Christ. So when we choose to follow Christ we are essentially choosing to serve God and to work for God. When we serve God, we do it because of the love he has shown us, and through the example of Christ we should now seek to live a life that gives glory to God. In our daily activities our most important motive should always be primarily to give glory to God. So if you eat, or if you drink, or if you do anything, do it for the glory of God. 1 Cor 10:31.
The Purpose of Tithe
“God’s plan for the support of His work on this earth is through the tithe and freewill offerings of His people. The tithe is the main source of funding for the total proclamation of the gospel to all the world by the Church. This includes a balanced and comprehensive evangelistic outreach to the public and the spiritual nurturing of church members. Because the tithe is reserved for a special purpose, freewill offerings must provide the funding for many functions of the gospel work.”
Don’t forget the mission
Have we forgotten what our work is as Christians? Have we forgotten that Sin was such a big issue and that God was willing to give up his only son? Have we forgotten our calling as members of God’s church? Christ completed his mission here on earth when he took up the sins of mankind upon himself when he died on the cross. As last day Christians we also have a mission which is to prepare, warn and teach the world about the Second coming of Jesus. The reason this concept of having a mission is not understood is because many of us are spiritually asleep. By being spiritually asleep we find ourselves in a position where we don’t understand the significance of the times we’re living in. Jesus is coming soon, there is a work to do and God enabled a system in which he can support his work on this earth through tithe and freewill offering.
When Jesus was on this earth his motivation was to do the will of the Father in heaven who sent him, John 4:34. In this same manner we should aim to put God first so that his will might be done here on earth. God provides you with a job and salary, and so by putting God first you will then be in a position in which tithing will occur because your main interest is in doing what needs to be done in order to support and advance the work of God’s church. God’s blessings will follow. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Mathew 6:33, New living translation.
