Knowing The Time Sermon

The post below is a transcript of a presentation i carried out a while ago called ‘Knowing The Time’. This theme was what led me to create this blog.

When the books of Daniel and Revelation are better understood, believers will have an entirely different religious experience. They will be given such glimpses of the open gates of heaven that heart and mind will be impressed with the character that all must develop in order to realize the blessedness which is to be the reward of the pure in heart. {TM 114.3}  TM = Testimonies to ministers.

  • So we see from the above that when the books of daniel and revelation are better understood, that those that are reading will have a new religious experience. This will be the experience that opens their minds to the type of character that must be developed.

The question to be asked: what is in the books of Daniel and Revelation that that will give us this new religious experience?

  • The books of Daniel and Revelation contain prophecies which shows us things that have to come to pass, in other words the books of Daniel and revelation help us understand the times, they help us know what time we’re living in.
  • So there is a link between understanding prophecy and character.

Romans 13:11 – And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

1 Chronicles 12:32 – And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

Time, Character, Prayer

Jesus knew the time.

It is the very essence of all right faith to do the right thing at the right time. Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, page 24:

Mark 1:14 – 15: Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

  • When Jesus was referring to time, he was referring to the beautiful prophecy of Daniel 8 and 9. this prophecy foretold the exact allocated time for Christ’s ministry.

Galatians 4:4: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law.

  • again we see the role that time played.

Jesus knew the time and therefore he was aware of the character he needed in order to go through what was ahead of him. How did he prepare?

  • Luke 5:16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
  • NKJV says So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed”  – Jesus was a praying man.

If Jesus knew the time, shouldn’t we also know the time, As followers of Christ.

What Time is it Today?

Let’s now zoom into the book of Daniel to see something about time, something that affects you and I today.

Read Daniel 8:13

  • Daniel is having a vision in which he sees one saint speaking to another, and one saint is essentially saying to the other “how long would the powers of the earth, dominated and inspired by the devil, trample down God‘s sanctuary, God‘s people, His truth, and His saints?” Coming events, crisis at the close page 8.

Read Daniel 8:14

  • The answer is given that this would happen after 2300 days.

This prophecy of Daniel 8:14 points to the year 1844. (For a more extensive study on Daniel 8, view a recent post i made on this.)

Daniel 8:17

  • Verse 17 tells us something special about the prophecy we have just looked at.
  • It reads: “So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision”.
  • In other words this vision of the 2300 days is a vision for the time of the end. So since 1844 we have been undoubtedly been living in the time of the end.
  • So if we’re living in the time of the end, then how should we be carrying out our lives?

Luke 21:36 – Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

  • Think about it, in order to watch, someone has to be what? awake right. And in order to awake they need to .. know the time..do you see the picture.
  • And we have just been studying that to know the time means to understand the times in which were living in, and this is what the books of daniel and revelation help us to do.
  • We saw this earlier when we spoke about Jesus: Jesus knew the time(Mark 1:14,15), therefore he was aware of the character he required(1 Peter 2:22). The root of this was the praying lifestyle he had (Luke 5:16).

Three Angels Messages – A Practical Message

The three Angels messages tells us today what the time is. We need to study these messages deeper to truly know what’s coming. These messages also tell us what type of character we need to have.

Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come(Time element): and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. 9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

How are the 3 angels linked to Character?

As a result of the 3 angels messages what kind of people do we see?

Revelation 14:12 – Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

So we see in verse 12 that the type of people which are associated with understanding of the time(in this context this refers to those that hads understanding of the three angels messages)

The main point of this study was see that we need to Know The Time, and that knowing the time is the key which helps us know what we have to do in the current times we’re living in. The books of Daniel and revelation show us our need for Christ that we may have the right characters. We need to pray that we may have the mind of Christ(Philippians 2:5), so that we may be able to stand. It’s only by having the mind of Christ that we may have the character of Christ.

The three angels message help us Know the Time, our need for Christ, upcoming events, and also the character that we need to have. This is what we need…practicality.

Summary

When the books of Daniel and Revelation are better understood, believers will have an entirely different religious experience. They will be given such glimpses of the open gates of heaven that heart and mind will be impressed with the character that all must develop in order to realize the blessedness which is to be the reward of the pure in heart. {TM 114.3}  TM = Testimonies to ministers.

Do we truly believe the time we’re living in?

  • Do we believe, if so why do we do the things that we do?

Proclamation of Truth Our Work—In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light-bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the Word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import,—the proclamation of the first, second,and third angels’ messages. There is no other work of so great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention. {Ev 119.3}

Think about this:

Shall we wait until God’s judgments fall upon the transgressor before we tell him how to avoid them? Where is our faith in the Word of God? Must we see things foretold come to pass before we will believe what He has said? In clear, distinct rays light has come to us, showing us that the great day of the Lord is near at hand, “even at the door.”—Testimonies For The Church 9:19, 20 (1909).
