In The Beginning

Welcome!

For those who have stumbled on this post and want a bit more evidence on the authenticity and how amazing the bible can be then please click here for the previous post. It contains a video that discusses the most popular bible prophecy which has amazed the world for years.

Let’s now get straight into our topic. Everything begins in the book of Genesis. Throughout this post we will take a look at a few topics and we’ll join them all up at the end. We will look at the war which began in heaven, the biblical story of creation, theistic evolution, and finally we will answer the question of ‘why should I choose to worship God’.

Deception: The greatest attack on the truth

And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him…Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.” Revelation 12:7-9,12

This war began in heaven and spilled out into the earth when Satan was cast out of heaven. This is a war based on rebellion against God. So by the time we get to Genesis chapter 3 we see that the serpent mentioned there is also referred to in the book of Revelation as the Devil, Revelation 12:9. The devil’s aim is to attack those who live on the earth through deception. He scammed Eve by deceiving her into believing that God didn’t mean what he said when he told her not to eat from the tree. The devil’s plans is to deceive humanity and to lead us away from the truth the same way in which Eve was deceived. An example of this is the way in which some have been deceived especially regarding the origins of the universe and of mankind. This attack has a foundation which is based on attacking the word of God, the aim is to try and lure us away from real bible truth.

Can the Old Testament be trusted at all?

There are many interpretations of creation, but before we get into the meat of the topic a few questions first need to be addressed: Can the book of Genesis actually be trusted? How reliable is this book as a source of truth? What do the new testament writers say about the book of Genesis?

Well, In Matthew Chapter 19 Jesus is answering a question and his response is interesting as we see below:

The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder, Mathew 19:3-6.

As we can see Jesus quoted from the book of Genesis, he acknowledges that the book is a source of truth by using a passage from that book as an answer to a serious question. His response comes from the book of Genesis 2:24. The reader can have comfort, not just through this one verse, but through many other new testament verses in which the book of Genesis is quoted from and commonly referred to.

Biblical Creation

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth… And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good…Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made, Genesis 1, Genesis 2:1-3.

After God had made the world he reviewed what he had made and he saw that it was good ,The result of his creation was perfect at that time, (…And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good, Genesis 1:31). It is important for me at this time to mention that the world was made through Jesus, and that he was not a created being because the bible shows us that he was the creator, see below:

Through his power all things were made: things in heaven and on earth...Everything was made through him and for him.The Son was there before anything was made. And all things continue because of him. Colossians 1:16,17  , John 1:1,John 1:14,  Psalms 24:1.

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds, Hebrews 1:1-2.

Now that we see who Jesus was we can now start to see why his sacrifice remains the centre of a Christian’s faith. The world was made through him but he came to this earth and was then killed by his own creation that rejected him, yet, because of love he was willing to go through what he went through just for the sake of anyone who would choose to believe and have faith in him and his sacrifice. See John 1:11, John 1:14, John 3:16.

Theistic Evolution

Let’s now pause for a second and take a look at something. As we have seen from the bible the book of Genesis tells us that God created the world by his word. This is verified in the new Testament because we saw that it was Jesus who created the world. However, the theistic evolution vs biblical creation discussion is one that gets people thinking, it usually stirs up the innocent mind and usually produces questions such as: Is it okay to believe in evolution and also believe that God created the world instantly through his word? Couldn’t evolution have been part of Gods plan? If God did create through evolution then doesn’t this mean that death came before sin? These are questions that will be further addressed in the upcoming posts but in this next section we will focus just on the concept of theistic evolution.

The definition of Theistic evolution is:  ‘Theistic evolution, theistic evolutionism or evolutionary creationism are views that regard religious teachings about God as compatible with modern scientific understanding about biological evolution. Theistic evolution is not a scientific, but a range of views about how the science of evolution relates to religious beliefs.

In the literal biblical account of creation we see a powerful God who creates by the power of his spoken word. Another example of the power of God’s word is through a promise given by God’s word in the book of 1 John as it reads: ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9.  Through this a christian has the assurance that God will be faithful to his word and will forgive and clear anyone of their sins if they sincerely confess their sins to him. The God that created the world instantly in 6 literal days by his word is the same God that will forgive you instantly when you confess your sins. Faith is believing that God will do what he said he will do.

Bible vs. Scientific Research

At one point the world was believed to be flat, but when more knowledge emerged through research the flat world theory was done away with. It is interesting to note that many important aspects that have been discovered by science research had already been hinted at in the bible, this link shows an example of this and how relevant the bible can be in terms of science and as a health guide. The bible has taught us some amazing things such as the importance of diet and also of hygiene.  One field in particular which stands out in my opinion is Paleontology. Paleontology as a subject is one that is always of interest to many bible readers, but the problem arises when conclusions drawn by Paleontologists are seen as becoming a threat to the integrity of the biblical account of the origins. There are many things we have not been told about the world before the flood, of which many questions from science would be answered today. Science should never be rejected. However, By using the bible as a filter we can then test ideas and theories in order to remain in harmony with the truth and revelations that God has given us through the his word.

Worship

At the start of this post we looked at the war which began in heaven in which there are two opposing sides. On one side the aim is to deceive humanity just as Eve was deceived in Genesis 3, the other side however is interested in our salvation at the end of time. In the book of Revelation we see that Worship will be the determining factor at the end of time. This concept is found in the books of Revelation 13 and 14. Revelation 13:4 speaks of worship to an entity which was given its power by the devil, but In Revelation 14:7 we are called rather to worship God the creator, “…worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. This is a call to worship him who made the heaven and the earth in the beginning as we clearly saw from the very first sentence in the Bible.

God is worthy of worship because he created us. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created”,Revelation 4:11.

A Bit of trivia: On The First Day God created—Light, The Second Day—Sky, The Third Day—Dry Land and Plants, The Fourth Day—Sun, Moon, and Stars, The Fifth Day—Fish and Birds, The Sixth Day—Land Animals and People, The Seventh Day – God rested and sanctified the day (This is the origin of the sabbath rest)
