Day by day we live through life by making decisions, sometimes the decisions are simple and straightforward such as what you want to eat for dessert. Other times we have to make bigger decisions such as how to choose the right partner.

In this post we will look at 3 questions that you can ask yourself  before making a decision, especially important life-long decisions.

As followers of Christ, what better way can we learn to make decisions than to use a method he used to make decisions.

3 Questions To Ask Before Making Decisions

Question  1 – How will my decision glorify God?

As followers of Jesus we can learn from his example through the verses below.

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]John 4:34 –  Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.[/otw_shortcode_quote]

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]John 8:29 – And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.[/otw_shortcode_quote]

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]Luke 22:42 – Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.[/otw_shortcode_quote]

Question  2 – Is my decision purely selfish, and if possible how will others be blessed?

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]Philippians 2:3 – Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.[/otw_shortcode_quote]

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]Romans 12:10 – Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;[/otw_shortcode_quote]

[otw_shortcode_quote border_style=”bordered”]1 John 4:20 – If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?[/otw_shortcode_quote]

Below is a great quote about selfishness, from the Book Desire of Ages.

There is nothing, other than the selfish heart of man, that lives unto itself. No bird that cleaves the air, no animal that moves upon the ground, but ministers to some other life. There is no leaf of the forest, or lowly blade of grass, but has its ministry. Every tree and shrub and leaf pours forth that element of life without which neither man nor animal could live; and man and animal, in turn, minister to the life of tree and shrub and leaf. The flowers breathe fragrance and unfold their beauty in blessing to the world. The sun sheds its light to gladden a thousand worlds. The ocean, itself the source of all our springs and fountains, receives the streams from every land, but takes to give. The mists ascending from its bosom fall in showers to water the earth, that it may bring forth and bud.

Question 3 – Does it pass the Philippians 4:8 test?

Philippians 4:8 contains a list of qualities that can be used to benchmark. So if you want to be certain about a decision, see if it meets the criteria list in this verse.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
